So I spent last weekend attempting to learn Perl, I thought it would be helpful for my OS building. It was helpful, but after reading up on it, things were getting more advanced then I would like them to be. So I thought up a small project I could make with Perl to see what my grasp of it was. I build a Text Based Game Engine… Have you played Zork? I built an engine for that, except I added a combat system and a RPG like leveling system (or will soon).
This is going to be my pet project until I get it complete, and maybe even an editor to plug in to it, so other people can make their own games. This is the problem, this engine has no use, no one is going to use it, it will just sit on my dropbox and nobody will ever touch it. But it’s gonna be a fun project, and maybe someone will find something fun to do with it.
So, sadly, my OS building is on hold, and my Game Engine creation juices have just started to run.

That’s right, I’m building an OS.
So, I’m taking a CISCO networking class, and the teacher is a HUGE Minecraft fan. Last year, he had the class build a Minecraft computer, I’ll post a picture of it later, but it’s pretty impressive.
The only problem he has with it is that it runs Windows 7. So really, you could use the computer for anything you want to, not just playing Minecraft, so he wants to fix that. He wants an OS that would just boot directly into Minecraft (and maybe a login screen…). He’s actually going to give me extra credit for doing this for him.
I started working on it last night, and I found out that’s going to be a lot harder and longer that I first thought it would be. I figured that I could just take a small linux base, write a script that would install drivers and java and download the minecraft.jar file, and then just run it from command line. NOPE! Java needs to be in a graphical environment for it to fire anything that uses the graphics card. To test this, I installed a small and very lightweight GUI (fluxbox), and it ran perfectly fine. So I need to spoof java that it’s in a graphical interface.
Another problem that I’m going to have is that once I have it all working, I need to write the scripts needed to: a)update Java, b) download all of the required drivers and c) be able to save the game… After that’s all done I can just write it as an ISO file and you should just be able to boot it from a USB stick.
So I’m debating wether to remake the entire thing (I would use the guide Linux From Scratch) or if I should just use a base, and go off of that.
I think that this will be quite a long project, and I will periodically talk about how it’s going.

(I still haven’t figured out how I want to sign my posts…)
I completely forgot that I had created this… So much for posting everyday.
So currently I’m working on a film short, that I hope to film tomorrow, if all goes right. It’s very abstract, and I have no idea how explain it without just showing it to you. So I’ll post that once it’s up on some video website.
I started college two weeks ago! I’m doing a program called PSEO, so I can take college classes during my high school years, and the school pays all of the fees associated. Pretty nice gig.
I’m also getting my web development company rolling, after slacking on it for a long time, I decided that I should start actually doing something. I might even link this blog to the site, to make it a little bit more dynamic.
So… I don’t know if I’ll update this every day, like I originally planned, but it should be much more frequent than 7 months…
See ya later,
Sam
So I have a friend of mine that makes a show he calls “Dumb Cops”. But since he’s 15 and doesn’t know a lot about how movies and TV shows are made, they’re really not quite up to par yet. So I was thinking, if I jumped on him and helped him out (with writing, editing, directing and vfx’s), we might be able to make something of decent quality.
I had an idea of creating a community site, one where anyone can post things. So it’s not just the admins and people who created the site that are doing anything. Of course people would go on a probational period before I let them post without moderation (we want to keep it PG), but after that they could post whenever they wanted. Do you think that this is a good idea? I would put the video series I’m working on there, and “Dumb Cops” would be there.
I’m still trying to get the comments to work…

So I recently found the show “Merlin”, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a prequel to King Arthur, which is kinda a nerdy thing to be into, but this show definitely shows it in a good light. Another thing about it is that it’s British… Which I think is weird. It’s probably because I’m American, but I’ve never thought that British TV was of note in America. If your British out there, don’t take any offense, I was just implying that I’ve never watched any British TV. I’m going to look around Netflix and see what other shows I can come up with to watch.
I’m also going to see if I can get the comments working…

So… I was home sick all day today, and being home sick at my house means laying in bed and attempting to sleep. Since the average person can’t sleep twenty four hours straight, I decided to grab my laptop and reinstall half-life 2. I forgot how much this game creeps me out, maybe it’s the realism or the fact that everything that they do sounds legitimate. It just creeps the crap out of me and I remembered why I only put about four hours into that game.
I have an old desktop sitting around my office that I have no particular use for. I was thinking about using it as a server, but then thought why? I had WAMP installed on my computer and really had no need for a server at home. So I thought about making it into a media center for our living room TV. I considered a couple of solutions that might work, but none that really fit perfectly. What I want is a linux distro that is just a media center, I was looking at XMBC, but it doesn’t have native support for Netflix and Hulu, which is a main thing that I want. I was also looking at Boxee, but after playing around with it, I didn’t think it was a good fit either.
Whilst laying around at home, I also had time to think about the zombie game that should be based in a high school. The school that I currently go to would be an awesome spot for a zombie shooter game, so I’m going to go and take some pictures to make models off of. I might post some test stuff here. I don’t really want to talk about to much of it before I get other things figured out, mainly figuring out what I can and cannot do. I’m also looking for an open source game engine to make this on, maybe give them some credit even. If anyone has some ideas, feel free to comment on it. (If the comments are working!)
That really should be all for today… I’m probably missing something really important, but who cares, I’ll just talk about it tomorrow.

So, in sitting in art class and I got am awesome idea for a zombie game. Imagine Nazi zombies in a high school with only school supplies as weapons. Since I’m posting from my iPod, in not going to go into much detail. I’ll post more when I get home.
To get started, I want to talk about what this blog will (most likely) be about. This blog will be about me, about what I do, and about what I want to talk about. This might include places I go, things I do and ideas I may have. So if you don’t want to hear about the mostly average life of a teenage person, don’t read this blog.
I am a web developer, game developer, and a lot of other developer type things that I can’t quite of think of right now. Yes, that does mean I’m quite a computer person, but I don’t think I’m to much of a nerd, just a kid who enjoy making computers do things. I have some ideas for some games I would like to make, I just don’t have the time right now, and I don’t know what platform to make them on. But I’ll talk about this stuff in more detail in a different post.
I love going places and taking pictures, so I’m probably going to post quite a bit of pictures of places I’ve been on here. So be prepared to hear about my incredible boring trip to someplace you’ve never heard of, and get a picture narrative to go along with it.
I’m planning on updating this every day, but I see this goal as being slightly unrealistic, because I’m a lazy person and have a lot of high school related homework, it might eventually change to bi daily. But I’ll notify people before that happens.
I’ve attempted to start blogs before, and none of them ever took off. I know that you have to have patience and to wait for people to come. But for months all I got was spam people wanting money. So I think that this might be a better place to start a blog, tumblr has a somewhat nicer community. (Or so I’ve been told.)
I think this is it for now.
